Styling Your Table Runner for Spring
Spring is the season of renewal, bringing fresh blooms, soft pastel hues, and a sense of lightness that’s perfect for refreshing your home decor. One of the easiest and most impactful ways to bring that spring feeling to your dining space is by styling your table with a seasonal table runner. Here’s how to dress your table with table runners for the spring season:
1. Choose Light, Fresh Fabrics
For spring, opt for table runners in lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, or silk blends. These materials not only look fresh and airy but also feel great, allowing the beauty of the season to shine through. A soft linen runner, such as our pre-washed pure flax linen runners, creates a relaxed, breezy look that’s perfect for casual spring meals or garden parties.

2. Opt for Pastel and Floral Patterns
Pastels are the hallmark of spring, so consider table runners in soft shades of blush pink, pale blue, mint green, or lavender. Floral prints are also an ideal choice to bring in the essence of the season. Look for delicate flowers or botanical prints that evoke the beauty of blooming gardens. You can go for a subtle floral design for an elegant look or a bolder, more whimsical pattern for a fun, lighthearted vibe.

3. Mix in Natural Textures
Spring is all about embracing nature, so don’t be afraid to experiment with runners made from natural materials such as jute, burlap, or even wicker. These textures add warmth and an organic touch to your table. A natural fiber runner can act as a neutral base, allowing you to incorporate vibrant spring colors through your plates, glassware, or floral arrangements.
4. Play with Layering
For a more sophisticated spring table setting, consider layering your table runner over a tablecloth or pairing it with placemats. A sheer white tablecloth with a brightly colored or patterned table runner creates contrast, while also allowing for a more dynamic look. Layering also allows you to play with different textures and colours, creating a rich visual experience without overwhelming the space. We used our large Stortorget table mats for this Spring layered table setting with three layers of table runners and hand crochet table cloth. Placemats can certainly be placed onto the table runner. Here we chose to place larger bamboo table mats underneath our eucalyptus hard board placemats for an ultimate layered look, still keeping the composition elegant.
5. Add Seasonal Accents
Once you have your table runner in place, add small touches that reflect the season. Think fresh flowers, such as tulips, daffodils, or daisies, in simple vases or mason jars. You can also scatter a few small spring-themed decorative items like bird figurines, bunnies, or elegant candles to enhance the overall look. A spring-inspired centrepiece on top of the runner will tie everything together and add that extra dash of charm.
6. Use a Runner for Casual and Formal Settings
A table runner can suit both casual brunches and formal dinner parties. For casual meals, choose a relaxed design, like stripes or subtle checks, paired with casual dinnerware. For a more formal spring gathering, opt for a luxurious fabric like silk or velvet with a more refined pattern—perhaps a damask or embroidered design. Your table runner can instantly elevate your setting, making it feel elegant and polished.
7. Keep the Runner Symmetrical or Asymmetrical
Depending on the mood you want to set, you can choose either a symmetrical or asymmetrical design. A symmetrical runner looks balanced and orderly, perfect for formal or traditional settings. On the other hand, an asymmetrical table runner—slightly off-center or draped artistically—can create a relaxed, modern look that’s ideal for a spring luncheon or informal gathering.
8. Consider Length and Size
When it comes to the length of your table runner, make sure it complements the size of your table. For a standard rectangular table, a runner should ideally be about 6-12 inches shorter than the length of the table. For round tables, choose a runner that complements the curvature, either by going with a circular shape or a short, centred rectangular design.
