My Swedish Easter celebrations, centred around the table
Swedish Easter table settings are so special because they beautifully blend tradition, nature, and a playful sense of colour and simplicity. Easter is a big celebration in Sweden, beautifully weaving together Christian traditions, pre-Christian folklore, and a deep cultural connection to the changing seasons—especially the joy of spring after the long, dark winter months.
Easter in Sweden coincides with spring’s return, making it a symbolic and emotional celebration. It’s not just about religion—it’s about welcoming warmth, light, and life back into daily life.
1. Bright, Cheerful Colours
Swedish Easter decor leans heavily on yellow, green, pastels, and natural tones, reflecting spring’s arrival. Yellow, in particular, symbolises both Easter and the return of the sun after a long, dark winter. I often use our Stortorget tableware collection with its gorgeous yellow leaves against the neutral hand painted background.
2. Natural Elements
We adore bringing nature indoors:
-
Birch twigs (påskris): Often decorated with colorful feathers, little eggs, or tiny ornaments.
-
Fresh flowers like daffodils, tulips, and pussy willow branches are central.
-
Moss, hay, or grass sometimes lines the table or centrepieces, especially for more rustic themes.
3. Rustic, Minimalist Tableware
Think simple ceramics, linen napkins, wooden accents. The aesthetic is clean but cozy, often with a farmhouse or country feel—functional, unfussy, but still elegant. This tablescape combination with our Ida-Lilja tableware and soft natural linen, showcases elegance with natural elements.
4. Family, Food, and Togetherness
Easter in Sweden is very family-oriented:
-
Long meals, decorated tables, and Easter egg hunts.
-
Traditional foods like pickled herring, salmon, eggs, lamb, and lots of candy (påskgodis) in colorful paper eggs.
It’s a time for gathering, feasting, and enjoying the slower pace of the holiday.
